Our Mission

The Detroit Midwifery School mission is to train skilled, compassionate and diverse entry-level midwives who safeguard physiological birth and reproductive experiences by providing care that is informed by intersectionality, tradition and scientific evidence.

We are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, particularly those who identify as Black, Indigenous, trans and queer. We recognize the unique challenges and barriers that these students may face in pursuing their education and career goals, and we are dedicated to providing the resources, support, and opportunities necessary for their success.

Homebirth Midwives are an Integral Part of Social Justice.

Studies have shown that midwifery care can significantly reduce maternal mortality, particularly among Black women, who experience the highest rates of maternal mortality and morbidity.

Many recent publications have shared data that shows “midwives, integrated fully into U.S. maternity care, could help reduce perinatal health disparities and address provider workforce shortages”

Birth is a transformative life event that can serve as a catalyst for folks to reclaim their autonomy and power. Individualized care and social support are just some of the pillars that midwifery care brings into play for birthing families. Simply put: The world needs more midwives!

"I cannot be free while any woman is unfree, even if her shackles are different from my own." -Audre Lorde

This quote speaks to the the importance of recognizing and fighting for reproductive justice. It highlights the fact that true freedom cannot exist while birthing people are denied their rights to make informed choices about their bodies and reproductive health.

Reproductive justice goes beyond reproductive rights and encompasses issues surrounding access to health care, education, and resources necessary to make informed decisions about reproductive health. It recognizes the intersectionality of these issues and the ways in which they disproportionately impact marginalized communities. By working towards reproductive justice, we can create a society where everyone has the autonomy and resources to make decisions that are best for themselves and their families.
